What black tie means for men and women
Black tie means a black dinner jacket with silk lapels, or a knee-length cocktail dress or floor-length gown. Polished shoes and a real bow tie finish it.

Black tie means a black dinner jacket with silk lapels for men, or a knee-length cocktail dress or floor-length gown for women 1. Both dress lengths work equally well, and polished shoes with a real bow tie finish it.
A dinner jacket is not a business suit
Many people show up in a black business suit and think they have black tie. They do not. A dinner jacket and a business jacket look similar at a glance, but one is built for formal evening and the other for an office.
A dinner jacket has silk lapels: either peaked lapels that point up at the shoulders, or shawl lapels that flow down smoothly. A business suit has notch lapels, which are plain fabric that cut away sharply. The silk catches light and signals that this is evening wear, not work wear.
If your jacket does not have silk lapels, it is not a dinner jacket. A black business suit reads as "I grabbed my work blazer" and signals you either do not own formal wear or did not care to dress for the occasion. If an event says black tie, wear what that means.
For men: the jacket, bow tie and shoes
A black dinner jacket with silk lapels is the core. Pair it with black trousers. A cummerbund or waistcoat sits between the jacket and trousers to hide the shirt front; plain black is the safest choice.
A real bow tie finishes the picture. Not a clip-on. A proper bow tie shows you know how to tie one, and clip-ons read as shortcuts. If you cannot tie one yet, practise a few evenings before the event, not an hour before you leave.
Shoes must be plain and polished: black leather oxford shoes or black patent leather. No texture, no decoration, no colour but black. Scuffed shoes show immediately under formal wear, so shine them well. Socks are black and long enough that no skin shows when you sit down.
A shirt is white or cream, plain, with a stiff front and cufflinks. The shirt studs hold it closed instead of buttons. Cufflinks are understated: silver, gold, or mother of pearl. Nothing novelty, nothing monogrammed with your initials, nothing that says "look at this".
For women: knee-length or floor-length, both work
Black tie dress for women is a cocktail dress to the knee or a full-length gown 1. Both are correct. The length does not matter; the formality does.
A knee-length cocktail dress is often easier to move in and less fussy to wear. It reads as elegant and put-together without the effort of a full skirt. A floor-length gown is more formal and photographs better, and some venues or dates feel grand enough to ask for it.
Choose on the venue, the season and what you feel confident in. If you are unsure which the room leans towards, ask your date; either length is correct.
Colour need not be black. Black is traditional and works always, but a deep jewel tone, navy, burgundy, or even a neutral like gold or silver can work for black tie, especially for women. Avoid bright colours and pastels: they read as less formal.
Jewellery and accessories: one focal piece
Formal wear is already visible from across a room. Jewellery and accessories should not compete with it. The rule is one focal piece: either earrings, a statement necklace, a bracelet or a ring. Not all of them.
Choose one piece that matters and keep the rest minimal. If you wear a statement necklace, skip the bracelet. If you wear dramatic earrings, keep the neck bare. The same goes for men: good cufflinks and a watch, nothing more.
- One focal piece of jewellery, either earrings, necklace, bracelet or ring.
- Plain, polished shoes: black leather for men, heels or flats for women.
- No novelty pieces and no text on clothing.
- Hair and makeup finished but not theatrical: formal, not costume.
- A small clutch or evening bag, if needed at all.
Hair, makeup and final details
Hair should be styled in a way that feels finished. An updo looks formal; loose hair works if it is smooth and intentional, not windblown or casual. Makeup is done, but it is makeup for evening light, not stage makeup.
Fragrance is appropriate but subtle: a standard spritz, not a cloud. Nails are clean and polished, or natural if you prefer.
Avoid carrying a backpack, a sports bag, or a casual tote. If you need to bring something, use a small clutch or evening bag. A phone in a jacket pocket works. Do not carry a water bottle or gym gear.
What to do if you are unsure
If you are going as someone's guest, ask your date how strictly the room keeps the code. They have usually been to similar events:
The invitation says black tie. Do people there go floor-length, or is cocktail length usual? And do the men all wear dinner jackets?
The plus-one guide covers the rest of the night. If the event is part of a trip, pack the formal outfit in a garment bag and hang it the moment you arrive.
Black tie is one of several codes. The dress codes guide sets out white tie, lounge suit and smart casual too, so you know which one you are reading on the next invitation.
