Myth: sugar dates are all fine dining and five-star hotels

Sugar arrangements vary widely, from companionship to practical love. Most do not involve fine dining or luxury hotels, despite what online images suggest.

Two people on a date

Sugar dating is not a single thing, and it is not all champagne and hotels. Research finds striking diversity in what sugar arrangements involve, from paid companionship to pragmatic love, and most do not match the luxury-focused images that dominate search results.

What research actually found

Two major studies paint a picture of variety. In Sweden, researchers interviewed and surveyed sugar dating participants. They found striking diversity in what sugar dating means to participants, what they do together, and how money or gifts are involved 1. Some participants enter arrangements for purely practical reasons; others enjoy them.

In the United States, a qualitative study of women in sugar relationships identified seven distinct types 2. These included compensated dating, sugar companionship, sugar friendships and pragmatic love. Only one of the seven types could be considered prostitution.

What stands out is the range. These are not seven variations on the same thing. They are fundamentally different arrangements with different expectations, different levels of involvement, and different reasons for entering them.

What the images are selling

Online, sugar dating imagery runs to private jets, Michelin-starred restaurants and resort pool photos. These exist, but they show only one slice of what sugar dating looks like. The images are marketing. They sell the fantasy, not the everyday reality for most people who are actually in arrangements.

This matters because a new person scrolling through results forms an expectation. They picture themselves in one of those settings, then feel out of place or like they are doing it wrong when a date turns out to be a quiet dinner at a neighbourhood restaurant, a weekend away at a modest hotel, or tickets to a show they could not normally afford. You are not doing it wrong. Most people are doing something similar.

The dates people actually choose

Sugar arrangements vary because the people in them vary. Some people enter sugar dating primarily for financial reasons, and they care most about the money or gifts. Others care about the connection and the financial part is secondary. Some are looking for mentoring or emotional support. Some want a relationship that looks and feels like dating, just with clear expectations from the start.

What happens on a date depends on what both people are there for:

  • A coffee date or a walk in a neighbourhood neither of you knows yet, to decide if you want to spend time together.
  • A meal at a restaurant that matters to one of you: it might be fine dining, or it might be the place they have wanted to try for months.
  • A day trip or an overnight somewhere one person has been curious about.
  • Tickets to something: a concert, a show, a sports event, something you both wanted to experience.
  • An activity you would not normally do alone: a cooking class, a photography workshop, a private lesson in something you wanted to learn.
  • Time together doing ordinary things: a movie night, a walk, a drive, a conversation over tea.

None of these are glamorous. None of them cost thousands. A good date is one both people enjoy, and that happens in hotels and at home just as much as it does in fine dining rooms.

How to find what you actually want

Your profile is where you set this out. Rather than copying the luxury aesthetic from Instagram, describe what you actually want to do together. A generous member looking for companionship should say so. An attractive member who wants mentoring should name that. Someone looking for practical support alongside romance should be clear about it.

In messages, ask about what the other person genuinely enjoys. "Where would you take someone you wanted to impress, and where would you take someone you just wanted to spend time with?" You will get honest answers. "What is a date you remember not because of where it was, but because of how it felt?" That tells you what they value.

I have enjoyed the fancy restaurants, but I remember the dates better when we just talked and forgot about time.

What makes a sugar date work

A sugar date works when both people got what they wanted, and when the arrangement is honest about what that is. It works when money is not the entire conversation, because it is rarely the entire relationship, even in arrangements focused on financial support. And it works when two people like each other enough to show up, not just because a payment is involved.

Read getting started if you are new. Spend time on the sugar dating guide to understand the range of arrangements and work out what appeals to you. Then write your profile and your first message as if you mean them. The person on the other side of the screen is as tired of the fantasy as you are.
