Should you state an age range in your profile?
Yes, if you have one: a stated range saves both sides from messages that go nowhere. Use it alongside search filters.

If you have an age range, state it. It saves both sides from sending and receiving messages with no future, which costs everyone time.
Why age ranges matter
On a dating site, your profile does one job: it answers the question someone is asking themselves. "Would I meet this person?" The answers are yes, no or maybe. An age range helps them decide that without sending you a message first.
If someone is looking for a partner over 40 and you are 28, they know straight away. No awkward opening message. No mutual time spent. You both move on to someone more likely.
That efficiency is a kindness to both of you. It happens on every site where people can state limits, and it works.
When to state an age range
State a range if you have preferences about age. If you genuinely have no preferences, leave it out. If you have a minimum or a maximum, or both, name them.
A range is useful if you are:
- Looking for a significant age gap, like 15 years or more.
- Unwilling to meet someone under 25 or over 50 (or any other cutoff).
- Seeking someone in a particular life stage: established in a career, retired, a parent of grown children.
- Looking for someone your own age or close to it.
How to state an age range
Be straightforward. No judgment, no apology, just the number.
I'm looking for someone between 35 and 45.
Ideally 40 or older.
I date within about 5 years of my age.
All of these work. Some profiles put it in a headline, some in the main bio, some in the area where the platform asks about it. Put it where you can find it easily when you update your profile later, so the information stays current.
Keep the range realistic
State a range that matches the person people will actually meet. If you are 35 and say you want someone 25 to 45, you are being realistic. If you are 35 and say you want someone 25 to 55, you are either indecisive or hoping to expand your options, and you will send a lot of confused messages.
Your own age matters here. A range that is too wide reads as not knowing what you want, which makes people hesitant to message you. State a range you would actually pursue, then meet people in it.
Use filters too
Your profile state tells people who you want to meet. Search filters let you quietly narrow who you look at. Both work together.
If you are a generous member looking for someone 25 to 35, you can state that in your profile and then use search to show only that range. If you are an attractive member and you do not want to state an age preference, you can use search filters to show only profiles in your range and hide your own age concerns in the background.
Neither approach is wrong. State in your profile what you want people to know. Use filters for the rest.
What an age range does and does not mean
An age range says you have a preference. It does not say someone outside that range is bad or worthless. It says that for this thing you are doing on this site right now, you know what you are looking for.
Every member is 18 or over, and everyone on the site chose to be here. If someone sees your age range does not include them and they message you anyway, they are taking a shot. How you reply is up to you. An age range is just information that helps people sort.
When to update it
If your age changes, update the range. If your preferences shift, update the range. If you are 30 today and you said you wanted someone 25 to 35, you did not mean "25 to 35 forever". You meant "that range right now". When you turn 35, the range that makes sense is probably different.
Update your profile every few months to keep it honest. That is also when you check the rest of what you wrote and make sure it still sounds like you.
For generous members
If you are providing the generosity in the arrangement, stating an age range cuts down on messages from people who think you are looking for someone their age. You can be clear: "I am looking for someone 21 to 28" is information, and it sets a boundary without being cold.
For attractive members
If you receive more messages than you send, an age range is quieter than no information at all. It lets people self-sort. You might also not state a range and use the search filters to look at only profiles in an age range you prefer, which puts the boundary decision in your hands instead of on your profile.
