How to say no when an ex wants to get back together
A first no is firm and kind. A second no is shorter. A third request means you block them. Scripts and three key phrases that work.

When an ex wants to get back together, the best answer is one firm, kind no. Say it once, give no reason they can pick apart, and move on. The hardest part is not softening it on the second ask, because a second no is shorter and a third request is the moment to block them.
Why reasons make it worse
Your ex hears a reason as an argument they can win. You say you are not ready. They hear a timeline: wait and I will be ready. You say you want different things. They hear a challenge: tell me what you want, I will change. You say you need space. They hear an absence, not a decision.
A firm no has no reason. It leaves nothing to negotiate.
The first request: say what you have decided
Your ex gets in touch. They might be warm, apologetic, honest about their part in the breakup. This makes a no harder to say. But a sincere apology does not change your answer. Say it early and say it clearly.
I appreciate what you are saying, and I have decided not to get back together. I need you to respect that.
The words "I have decided" matter. You are not weighing options, checking the door, or asking yourself questions. A decision is closed. Your ex might push. Do not explain. Repeating the same sentence once more is enough: "I have decided. I need you to respect that."
Why "not right now" opens the door
Many people say "not right now" or "not for a while" when they mean no. Do not. Those words mean yes, just later. An ex who hears "not right now" will wait. They will check back in six months. They will bring it up again when you are lonely or they have something to prove. Use them only if you mean it.
The second request: say less
Your ex asks again, sometimes within days. They might have a new reason: they have changed, they have thought of something you said, they know what went wrong now. Do not engage with the reason. Do not be drawn into a conversation about what they have learned or what you have in common.
I said no. That has not changed.
That is all you say. No apology. No softening. No "I need time to think about it" or "it is not you". A simple, short sentence closes the conversation. If they push further in that message, do not reply.
When they come back with money, status or a promise
Some exes return with something new: a job they got, an engagement, an apartment, money saved up, a plan for the future. They think this is the reason you said no. It is not. Your no is not about their resources or their progress. Your no is about whether you want to be with them. That does not change because they are richer or more settled.
I am glad things are going well for you. That does not change what I said.
This script acknowledges them without reconsidering. It does the same work as the second no: it is short, it is final, and it leaves nothing open. Do not let them reframe the conversation as if their changes have given you a reason to reconsider.
A third request is the moment to act
First no: a decision. Second no: you respect my answer. Third no: you are not respecting me. At this point your ex is not asking, they are pushing, and pushing past a no is a boundary break. This is when you set a boundary. Do not answer again. Do not explain that it is the final warning. Simply stop replying.
If they keep going, block them. You have given them two clear chances. A person who will not take no is telling you who they are. They are not ready for you to have moved on, and that is not your responsibility to fix.
What to do if you are uncertain
If you are still deciding whether you want them back, do not say no yet. A no said while you are uncertain will wobble. The first time they say something kind or they prove they have changed, your no will break because it was not solid to begin with.
Take time to think. Write down why you broke up. Sit with it for a few days. When you are clear that no is right, a no said once will hold. You will not second-guess it when they apologise or when you are lonely on a Friday night. You will know your answer.
Why this matters for dating again
A person looking for a relationship with you will want to know you are ready. They want to know you are not waiting for someone else to change their mind, and that your no to your ex means something. When you can say no to someone who wants you back, and mean it, people who are looking for something real will trust you more.
