What to do in the hour after a first date
Call or message your friend, note your feelings while fresh, send a short thank-you or clear no within 24 hours, and report the profile if anything crossed a line.

The hour after a first date is the time to step back and check in with yourself and the people who care about you. Call or message a trusted friend as soon as you are home, write down how you felt while the date is fresh, send a brief reply by tomorrow, and report the profile if anything felt unsafe.
Tell a friend you are home
Before the date started, you told someone where you were going and when you would be back. Now that you are home, let them know. A quick message saying you made it back tells your friend they can stop watching the clock.
If you want to talk through the date right away, that is the time. Tell them how you felt. Did the person match their photos? Did they treat you well? Did they respect your boundaries? Your friend is not there to judge your choice to say yes or no to a second date. They are there to listen and to notice anything you might have missed because you were in the middle of it.
The Sexual Assault Resource Centre advises that you call them when you get home 1. A voice call can reach someone faster than a text, and your friend can hear your tone and know whether something is wrong.
Write down what you felt
Memory is short. In a day or two, the details of the date will blur, and you will forget the exact reason you felt hesitant or excited. Right now, while the evening is still clear, write something down. It does not have to be long.
Note what stood out: how the person made you feel, whether they listened when you talked, whether you felt safe in their company. Note any moments that made you uncomfortable, even small ones. Note whether they did what they said they would do: did they show up on time, did they suggest the place they promised, did they pay for what they offered to pay for? These details matter when you are deciding whether to meet again.
First date: arrived 15 minutes early, met me at the entrance, chose a good spot in the restaurant. Talked more about themselves than asked about me. Respectful when I said I had to leave. Not sure if they were truly listening or just waiting for their turn to talk.
You are not being harsh. You are being clear. The stronger your notes are, the easier it will be to make a second decision weeks from now.
Send a reply by tomorrow
You do not need to decide your whole future tonight. But the other person is probably wondering whether you want to meet again. Send them a message by the next day.
If you want to see them again, a simple thank-you is enough: something short and genuine. If you do not, be clear and kind.
Thanks for a nice evening. I enjoyed meeting you, but I do not think we are a match. I wish you well.
That is what a good no looks like. It is not cruel, it is not cold, and it does not raise false hope. It does what it says: it ends the conversation clearly.
If you have not decided yet, say so: "I enjoyed it. Let me sleep on it and I'll message you this weekend." Then do. A week of silence after you have met leaves them guessing.
Report if something crossed a line
If something the person did or said felt unsafe, unwanted or disrespectful, report their profile. You do not have to be certain. Dateable's team reviews every report.
- They pressured you into something you said no to
- They were aggressive or made you feel threatened
- They lied about something significant (their age, their photos, their situation)
- They tried to move the conversation to a private channel too quickly
- They asked for your private information (your address, your workplace, your last name) even though you asked them not to
- They made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe in any way
Screenshot the messages first, then report. How to report and block walks through it step by step.
A checklist
- Call or text the trusted person you told beforehand and let them know you made it home
- If you want to talk through the date, do it now while it is fresh
- Write down your feelings and any moments that stood out, good or bad
- By tomorrow, send a short reply: a thank-you if you want to see them again, or a clear and kind no if you do not
- If anything felt unsafe or crossed a line, report the profile on the same day while you remember clearly
