How to block and report an ex-partner on Dateable

Block from Settings so they cannot contact you or see your profile. Report them to the Board if they broke community rules.

Two people on a date

You can block an ex-partner from Settings, and they will no longer see you in search, the Board or messages. If they harassed you, threatened you or broke community rules, report them to the Board as well: blocking stops them seeing you; reporting helps protect other members.

Why block an ex

When an arrangement ends, a clean break helps both of you move forward. Blocking stops them messaging you, seeing your new photos or applying to your Board posts. They stay blocked even if they create a new profile on Dateable, because blocking works on their account, not their device.

Blocking also stops you seeing them: no awkward stumble across their updated profile, and no temptation to check what they are doing now. It is private: they cannot see that you have blocked them. Some exes handle rejection well; others send unwanted messages or create drama. Blocking cuts off all of that, cleanly and without explanation.

The sooner you block after an ending, the sooner you both settle. Waiting gives them time to message, to ask you to reconsider, or to negotiate. None of that changes the outcome. Block when you have made the decision.

How to block them

Blocking takes two steps and takes seconds. Open their profile, tap the three dots or menu icon in the top right, and tap "Block". Or go to your Settings, scroll to Privacy, tap "Blocked members" and add them there. A blocked member cannot contact you, cannot see you in search results, and cannot see your photos or message history.

If they try to message you after you block them, they see an error: the message will not go through. If they search for you, you will not appear in the results. If you posted a Board listing before you blocked them and they had already applied, they can no longer see your messages or the listing. Past conversations are gone from their view, and they cannot access anything to do with you.

Blocking is firm but not aggressive. You are not announcing it to them or explaining yourself. You are simply removing access. If you are worried they will react badly to silence, block while you know they are busy: at work, at night, on a date. Blocking on a Friday afternoon means their panicked attempts to contact you will hit a wall until they get the message.

Screenshot before you block

Before you block, take screenshots of anything you may need later: abusive messages, promises they did not keep, or anything that matters to you. Once you block them, you lose access to your message history with them. Dateable does not restore deleted messages, so screenshots are your only proof if things go to court or to police.

Take a screenshot of their profile too, including their name, their photos and their verification status. These details help if you need to report them to police or to another platform later. A screenshot shows a timestamp and is better evidence than your memory of who they were or what they claimed.

Save the screenshots to a folder with a date and a note about what they show. You may never need them, but if you do, having them keeps you in control of what happened. Back up the folder to your cloud storage or email it to yourself so you do not lose it if your phone breaks or gets stolen.

When to report as well as block

Blocking is for your safety and peace of mind. Reporting is for everyone else. Report an ex-partner if they broke Dateable's community rules: if they harassed you, threatened you, sent unwanted sexual messages or photos, tried to move you off the app into private platforms, or lied about who they are or what they wanted.

Use the report page to tell the Board what happened. Include dates and as much detail as you can remember. The Board will review the account and take action: they may warn the member, suspend them or delete their account. A report does not name you: the process is confidential.

I want to end this, and I am blocking you on Dateable. If you contact me through any other means, I will report you to police.

The quote above is simple and sets a boundary. You do not owe anyone a reason or a long explanation. Send it once and then block.

Read the guide on blocking and reporting

The guide goes deeper into when to report, what evidence helps and how the process works. It also covers what to do if they will not accept the ending or keep trying to contact you through other means.

Blocking on Dateable does not block elsewhere

This is the thing most people get wrong: blocking someone on Dateable does not block their phone number, email, social media or any other platform. If they know your phone number, they can still text or call. If they follow you on Instagram, they can still message you there. You need to block them on those platforms too if you want to stop contact.

Go through your phone contacts and delete theirs. Check your email and social media privacy settings so they cannot message you. Block them on WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat or any platform where they can reach you. Some people will try to work around a Dateable block by contacting you elsewhere, so close those doors before they get the idea. This is especially important if you shared your number or social handles during the arrangement.

Change your phone number if blocking alone does not stop them contacting you. It is a big step, but if someone knows enough people in your life to get your number from a friend, or if they keep messaging from new numbers, a fresh start protects you more than blocking ever will.

If they are harassing you through other platforms, screenshot those messages too and report them to those platforms. Most have their own abuse reporting systems, and a string of messages from the same person across different apps may matter to police if it gets that far. Keep all the evidence together in one folder, dated and ordered by time.
