What to say to end contact with a suspected scammer

One line with no reason, then block and report. Don't explain how you worked it out; that gives them another chance to convince you.

Two people on a date

When you suspect a scammer, say nothing or one line that gives no reason and no information, then block and report. Anything longer opens a conversation where they get another chance to convince you.

Why one line beats an explanation

Scammers are quick. If you tell them how you worked it out, they have a new story ready. If you explain their fault, they apologise and counter. If you name the red flags, they address each one. They have spent weeks building trust with you; they are good at talking their way past one concern.

The person is not trying to understand. They are trying to keep you on the hook. Their goal is your time and money, not a real relationship. A long message gives them material to work with.

The point is not to convince them they were wrong. The point is to stop. One line, one time, then nothing more.

The one-line exit

Choose one line, send it once, and do not reply again:

I'm not continuing this. Goodbye.

Other versions:

  • This does not feel right to me.
  • I'm not interested. I wish you the best.
  • I don't think we're a match.

Do not:

  • Accuse them directly: 'You're a scammer' or 'You're not real.'
  • Explain how you knew: 'I reverse-searched your photo' or 'You asked for money too fast.'
  • Justify your decision: 'I looked you up online and...' or 'My friend said...'
  • Ask them to confirm the truth: 'Is that even your real name?'

What comes after

After you send that one line, expect one or more of three things: guilt ('I'm sorry, please give me a chance'), pleading ('I've been so honest with you'), or anger ('You're cruel'). You do not have to read any of it. You do not have to reply. Block immediately after you send your one line, or read nothing and block without a reply if that is easier for you.

The guilt and pleading are part of the scam. They are not signs you made a mistake. They are signs you were right to leave. A scammer who feels they have lost leverage will use every emotion they can think of: apologies, promises, tears, rage. None of it is real.

Some people find it helps to decide beforehand what they will do. One person says: 'I block the moment I hit send.' Another says: 'I read once, and then I block without responding.' A third says: 'I close the app immediately and come back to block when I'm ready.' Pick what feels right for you. There is no rule except this: do not keep talking.

Signs it is time to end it

You do not need proof to be sure. Trust your instinct. [uk-stop-think-fraud-romance] says 'If something feels wrong, end contact.' That is enough.

Common patterns that prompt one exit line:

  • They ask for money, or pressure you to move money, or push a money-making opportunity. [getcybersafe-three-ways]
  • They ask for gift cards, bank login details, or any payment method before you have met.
  • They say they cannot meet: they work on an oil rig, live overseas, or are stuck with a sudden crisis. When dates come up, a new excuse appears. [uk-stop-think-fraud-romance]
  • They move the chat off the dating platform to WhatsApp or email very quickly. [getcybersafe-three-ways]
  • They tell you they love you or want a serious relationship after a week of messages.

Block and report on Dateable

On Dateable, report and block are one press from any profile, message or listing. The process is simple in the guide to report and block. When you report a profile, a person reads it. Do not feel pressure to gather proof; describe what made you uncomfortable. Keep it short: 'Asked for money after a week' or 'Said they loved me and then wanted gift cards.'

Reporting is not just for you. Every report is data. When many people flag the same account, Dateable sees a pattern. When dozens of people report the same scammer, that person loses access. Your report is a small piece of shutting that down.

You can also use Dateable's general reporting option if something feels wrong but does not fit one specific category.

Why you are not being unkind

Ending a scam without explanation is not cruel. The person on the other end is playing a role, not building a real relationship with you. They have opened the same conversation with dozens of other people. One line and a block does not injure someone who was not genuine with you.

Real people deserve long explanations and a conversation. Scammers do not. If you are wrong, one person's disappointment is a small cost. If you are right, you stop the scam where it is.

After you block

Tell someone you trust what happened. Not to apologise or convince anyone: just so someone knows. Scams carry shame, but the shame is not yours. You acted on imperfect information, which is what scammers count on. Telling someone makes that clear.

If you sent money or personal information, contact your bank straight away. If your identity is at risk, contact IDCARE (1800 595 160 in Australia). Report to Scamwatch or your country's fraud service. Recovery is not guaranteed, but reporting means you are not alone and the pattern gets counted.

If you are shaken or embarrassed, that is normal. Take a break from dating for a week or two if you need to. Coming back to the app after a scare is hard, but hundreds of people do it every day. You are not foolish for falling for a scam; you are human.
