Two people on a date

Send your partner flight options, let them choose, then book in their name with the return date agreed before you pay. Send the confirmation straight to them, so they hold their own way home from the start.

Send flight options, let them choose

Search for flights that work within your budget. Find three to five real options and send them to your partner with the times, stops, and connections shown clearly. The goal is to let them pick departure and arrival times that work for their life, not yours.

A partner who has to adapt their schedule to fit a flight you chose will feel the adjustment every time they think about the trip. A partner who picked the flight feels ownership of the visit from the moment they see the confirmation.

If you are flying them into your city rather than meeting halfway, this choice matters even more. They are taking time away from their routine, their work and their own space. The least you can do is let them arrive and leave when it suits them.

Book in their name and send the confirmation to them

Once they choose, book the flights in your partner's full name as it appears in their passport. Then send them the booking confirmation straight away, not later. They need to see their name on the ticket and have the reference number.

With the reference in hand, they can check in and manage the booking with the airline themselves, without asking you. A ticket they control also removes any doubt that you own the trip or that they owe you for it later.

Agree on a return date before you pay for any flight

Talk through how long the visit will be. Three nights? A week? Decide before you book the outbound flight, and use that conversation to book the return as well.

A partner who does not know when they are leaving feels trapped, even in a good arrangement. They worry about overstaying, about your time running out, about what happens next. A partner who knows they leave on a specific date can relax into the visit.

This is especially important if this is a long-distance arrangement. A clear end date makes it easy to plan the next visit before this one ends.

Offer accommodation without obligation

Tell your partner they can stay with you, but also that you can book them a hotel or their own room nearby if they would rather. Give them the choice and do not take it personally if they choose the hotel.

Some people are happy as a guest in someone's home. Others need a door of their own to close. Early in an arrangement, a room of their own also means they can leave the evening whenever they choose. None of this is about you.

You are welcome to stay with me. If you would rather have your own space, I am happy to book you a hotel nearby. What works for you?

A generous member offering accommodation should make it clear and comfortable. If you want them to stay with you, say so. If you want them to have options, mean it.

Plan the first evening only

Before they arrive, plan the first evening: a restaurant, a bar, a walk, something you know will be easy and set a good tone. Send them the plan so they know what to expect and can dress for it.

Then leave the rest open. A visit where every hour is scheduled feels like a job, not a date. After you both land from the flight or they check into their hotel, you should have time to talk, to settle in, and to decide together what comes next.

You know your city and what you like. Let them see it with you, but also let them choose some of it. A partner who picks an activity or a place to eat becomes part of planning the visit, which is part of enjoying it.

Never bring up the cost

Your partner might apologise for the cost or offer to pay you back. Decline warmly. You offered the flights, and the offer does not come with an invoice.

Please don't. I wanted you here, and that's what the ticket was for.

If you catch yourself resenting the cost, or raising it in an argument, you set the budget too high. Fix that before the next booking, not during the visit. More ideas for trips together are in travel.
