Myth: every generous member is an older man
Generous members include women and people in same-gender arrangements. Research has looked almost only at heterosexual ones.

Generous members come in all kinds. Women are generous members. Same-gender arrangements run on the same clarity and mutual benefit as any other. Research so far has been too narrow to show this, which is why the myth persists 1.
The research is incomplete
Most studies of sugar dating have focused on heterosexual arrangements where men are the resource provider and women are the younger companion. A scoping review of 27 studies published in 2026 found that this narrow focus has left a gap in understanding. Sugar dating exists in same-gender relationships, with women as the older provider, and in arrangements that do not fit the heterosexual model at all 1.
When researchers do ask people about their openness to being the older resource provider, women answer differently from men. But differently does not mean closed. A survey of attitudes across 87 countries and 69,924 people found that being a woman predicted less openness to being the older resource provider, yet still significant numbers of women said yes 2.
Women are generous members
Generous members include women who want to mentor a younger partner, who have the means and the interest to support someone, or who simply prefer to be the one with resources in an arrangement. The reasons vary. Some generous women members want the clarity that comes with stating expectations upfront. Others enjoy the mentoring role, or prefer partners who are not bound by the traditional assumption that the woman will be supported.
If you are a woman thinking about being a generous member, your profile works the same way as anyone else's. You describe yourself clearly, choose photos that show who you are, and state what you are looking for. Verify with a live selfie, and browse profiles of people who interest you. You can message first, and you can apply to Board invitations just like anyone else.
Same-gender arrangements follow the same script
Two men can run a sugar arrangement. Two women can. The dynamics do not change. One person has more resources and offers support; the other person brings their time, attention and companionship. Both people benefit. Both people choose to be there.
Everything that matters in a generous member arrangement matters in same-gender ones: clarity about what each person wants, agreement on what generosity looks like, and respect for each other's time. If you are planning a sugar dating arrangement with someone of the same gender, the same safety and communication rules apply.
What a generous member actually is
A generous member is someone who has chosen to be clear about their resources and what they can offer in a relationship. Age and gender do not define it. Income and title do not define it. What defines it is a choice to say upfront: "This is what I have. This is what I want. Are we interested in the same thing?"
Being a generous member means you can offer:
- Financial support: gifts, experiences, travel, mentoring or tutoring
- Emotional support and consistent attention from someone who is interested in who you are
- Access to worlds the other person might not have encountered
- Time spent together that both people agreed to in advance
How to present yourself as a generous member
If you are considering becoming a generous member, whether you are a man, a woman, or part of a same-gender arrangement, the practical steps are the same. You describe yourself honestly. You make your profile a clear statement of who you are. You state what you want without apology.
When you message, you talk about more than money. A first message that mentions your income or title reads as a purchase offer, not an invitation. Instead, refer to something they wrote in their profile. Tell them one real thing about yourself. Ask one question that takes more than yes or no to answer. The person on the other end is deciding whether replying to you will be easy and pleasant. Make the answer yes.
I noticed you travelled through Japan last year. I spent three months there and I'm interested in what you saw. What was the place that surprised you most?
That message could come from anyone. It works because it shows attention, and because it invites conversation instead of asking the other person to start the work for you. Generosity starts in how you treat the other person's time.
The clarity part is the same for everyone
One reason generous members exist on Dateable is that the platform lets people be direct about what they want without shame. Whether you are a woman, part of a same-gender couple, or anyone else, the point is the same: you both know what you are choosing. You both know that generosity is part of it. You both agreed.
That clarity is rare in traditional dating. It is not rare on Dateable, and it is available to anyone who wants it. It does not matter what your gender is, who you are attracted to, or how much money you have. If you want to date someone with that kind of honesty, you can build it as a generous member, or as the attractive member who says clearly what they are looking for.
