Should you pause your profile or delete it?
Pause if you might come back. Delete if you are done. Paused profiles stay hidden and keep your data. Deleted profiles and all messages are gone within 30 days.

Pause your profile if you might come back. Delete it if you are done for good.
Pause: your profile stays yours
When you pause, your profile goes hidden. No one can find you, message you or see your photos. You stay a member. All your data stays put: your profile, photos, messages, applications on the Board, and your settings. You can unpause whenever you want and start again without rebuilding anything.
Your messages stay in place. Anyone you were talking to can still see the conversation thread if they look, but they cannot message you. You will not get notifications and your profile will not turn up in their searches. To them it will look like you have disappeared, which is why you need to send that message first.
Pausing works best when you know you will be back. You are in a new relationship and want to step away for a while. You are busier than usual and do not want to reply to messages. You are trying another app first. You had a bad run and need to reset. You are taking a break from the dating space but not closing the door.
Delete: everything goes
When you delete, your profile disappears immediately. Your photos disappear from the site. Your messages disappear. Your applications on the Board disappear. Your account is deleted within 30 days, and anything the system retained for security or legal reasons is deleted with it. The people you were talking to will see that your profile is gone, and your part of each conversation will vanish from their inbox.
Deleting is permanent. You cannot undelete, reactivate or recover any of it. If you want to join again later, you will start fresh with a new account, new profile, new photos. The person you went on three dates with will not know it was you when you sign up again.
You should delete if you are certain you will not come back, or if you are certain you do not want anyone you know on Dateable to find old messages or applications you made. It is a clean break.
When to pause
- You have started seeing someone seriously and want to step out of the dating space for a while.
- Life is too busy right now and you do not have time to meet or message.
- You want to try other apps or ways of meeting without deleting here.
- You feel tired and need to reset without losing everything you have built.
When to delete
- You are giving up on dating altogether and do not want a profile sitting around.
- You want a clean break and do not want messages or notifications from anyone you talked to.
- You want all your photos and data off the site permanently.
- You are leaving the sugar dating space entirely.
Tell people before you go quiet
Whether you pause or delete, anyone you are talking to deserves a heads-up. They are waiting for you, and silence reads as a fade. A short message costs nothing.
I've really enjoyed talking with you. I'm stepping back from dating for a bit and wanted you to know rather than just disappear. Thank you for the good conversations.
That message takes thirty seconds. Do not over-explain or apologise. You have no reason to. You are allowed to step away from the app. It is not a breakup or a rejection of them as a person. It is a choice about your own time and energy.
Send the message before you pause or delete. After you do, they may reply but you will not see it if you delete, and you will not see it if you pause unless they do so before the next notification batch. The point is to tell them something changed rather than letting them wonder.
If you are in the middle of setting up a date, tell them that too. "I was really looking forward to meeting you, but something has come up and I have to step away for a bit." This is especially important if you made concrete plans. They can reorganise their time.
What happens to your data
Deleting works in stages. Your profile and photos disappear right away so no one can find you. Your messages and Board applications stay visible to the people you were talking to for 30 days, then they disappear too. If they saved a conversation outside Dateable, it lives in their copy: that is not on you.
After 30 days, you have no data here. No profile, no photos, no message history, no trace that you were a member. If you want to know how your data flows through the site, read our privacy statement.
How to do it
In the app, go to Settings, then Account. You will see the option to pause or delete. Pausing asks you nothing and puts your profile away immediately. Deleting asks you to confirm twice to make sure you mean it, then it starts the 30-day countdown. For detailed steps and what to expect, read how to delete your account.
If you delete and change your mind
You have 30 days. Before those 30 days are up, you can reactivate your account and everything comes back. After 30 days, it is gone. Make sure you are ready.
Life changes
Sometimes you know you will be back. Sometimes you are sure you are done. Either way, pausing keeps your options open and delete closes the door cleanly. The one that fits depends on whether you think you will be back.
If you are ending an arrangement or the person you are seeing does not know you were on Dateable, that is another decision with its own time and words.
