Should you get verified before your profile is finished?
Finish your photos first, then verify. Verification compares a live selfie with your profile photos, so changing your main photo means verifying again.

Finish your photos first, then verify. Verification compares a live selfie against your profile photos, and changing your first photo means verifying again. It is easier to get it right the first time.
Why verification matters
Verification shows the person reading your profile that you are the one in your photos. A live selfie taken during the verification process is checked against your uploaded pictures by a real person. It does not check your identity documents, income or age. It does not confirm your profile details are true.
What verification does is prove you match your pictures. That small badge next to your name shifts the whole conversation. People are more willing to message a verified member, apply for your Board invitation, or suggest a date. A finished profile with the badge gets replies that a half-done profile without one does not.
The badge also shows when you verified. If your pictures are recent but the badge is from six months ago, someone is going to wonder. If it is fresh, the photos are fresh.
What changes after you verify
Once you are verified you can apply and post on the Board, and read every invitation in full. Unverified members with a complete profile can still browse and message, but the Board needs the badge.
Verification is not a one-time thing. If you change your first photo after you verify, you will need to verify again because the reviewer will compare the new one against the selfie on file. Your second and later photos can change without re-verifying. Your first photo is the anchor.
When to set your first photo
Your first photo is the one that matters most. It is what comes up in search, what someone sees first in a message thread, and the one the verification reviewer will compare your selfie against. It is also the hardest to change later without losing the verified badge.
Before you verify, spend time on choosing your photos. Natural light. Recent. A look that shows up in real life when someone meets you. If your first photo is a professional headshot from three years ago, or a photo where you are barely visible, or one where you look like a different person, change it before verification. You cannot easily change it after.
I want to change my first photo but I'm already verified. Can I upload a new one and re-verify?
Think through the rest of your pictures too. Do they show variety: what you look like at different times, in different light, doing things you enjoy? Do they match how you look on the day you verify? If you are planning a major change to your appearance, do it first, then photograph, then verify.
The photos you upload do not have to be final
You can update your second, third, fourth and later photos any time. Refresh your profile with new pictures as your life changes. If you took a good photo last week, upload it. If you want to take another photo this month, upload it alongside the old ones or swap one out. The only constraint is your first photo, which is locked to the verification.
This is why you finish your profile before verifying. You figure out the rest of your look. You test a few first photos. You see which one reads right to you. Then you pick the one you will keep and verify.
What to do if you choose the wrong first photo
If you have already verified and your first photo no longer feels right, you have two paths. You can delete it and upload a different one, then verify again. Or you can keep it and know that the people who message you have already decided they like what they see, photos and verification badge and all.
A second verification does not take long. The process is the same: a selfie, a check against your photos, and a few minutes while a reviewer confirms it is you. If a fresh photo is worth it to you, re-verify.
How to prepare for a smooth verification
Before you request verification, check these things:
- Your first photo is recent, clear and shows your face well
- Your photos are all of you: no heavily filtered versions and no photos that look like a different person
- You are ready to take a selfie in natural or indoor light, looking like you normally do
- All your photos have been reviewed and approved by Dateable
The last point matters. Every photo you upload is reviewed before other members see it. If the system tells you a photo is pending review, wait until it is approved before you verify. Use only approved photos.
When you are ready, go to verification and follow the steps. Take your selfie. Match it to your first photo as closely as you can: same light, same angle, same expression if you can. The reviewer will check whether it looks like you. Most verifications happen within an hour or two.
The real payoff
Verification unlocks the Board and lifts you in search. It tells other members you are serious. It is the single thing that changes the rate at which people reply. A verified profile with a finished set of photos is what most members look for when they are ready to make an arrangement.
The badge next to your name is proof you are real and that you look like your photos. It costs nothing. It takes a few minutes. Getting it right the first time means you do not have to do it again.
