A coastal walk, bike ride, tennis, climbing gym or dance class turns movement into a first date. Pick a level that suits you both.

Two people on a date

If you both like to move, make it the date. A coastal walk, a bike ride, tennis, a climbing gym or a dance class puts you side by side doing something you both enjoy. Active dates work best when you start on a busy public route, tell your date what to wear and bring, pick a level that suits the less fit of you, and finish somewhere you can sit, eat and talk.

Why active dates work

An active date does something that talking alone cannot: it gives you both something to do with your hands and your attention. You see each other move. You laugh at small mishaps. You find out whether you work well as a team, or whether you get in each other's way. None of that happens over dinner or drinks.

Movement also eases the awkwardness. If conversation stalls, you have the activity to carry you. If you both enjoy it, the endorphins help. It is a low-pressure way to spend a few hours before deciding whether to meet again.

Pick an activity you both enjoy

The right activity depends on what you have mentioned in your profile. If they said they run, an easy run or a walk on a busy coastal path works. If they named a sport, suggest a beginner class or a casual game. If they mentioned dance or yoga, a drop-in class or a workshop is perfect. The point is you are saying, 'I listened to what you said about yourself,' and you are doing it.

A few ideas that work anywhere:

  • A coastal walk or a park walk in daylight, somewhere busy enough that other people are around.
  • A bike ride on a flat, well-lit path with good foot traffic.
  • A tennis or badminton session at a local court.
  • An indoor rock climbing gym or bouldering wall.
  • A dance class, yoga class or other group fitness class, where a beginner can join and you move together.

Avoid activities that isolate the two of you, leave you far from help, or require expensive gear you might not have. A first active date is not the time to plan a solo hike or to assume they have climbing equipment.

Start on a public route where other people are

Meet in a public place with other people around 1. A popular walk on a weekend morning, a busy bike path in daylight, a class with an instructor: these suit a first meeting. If your date changes the place at the last minute to somewhere you do not know, cancel 1. Get yourself there and home, so you choose when to leave.

I'd like to meet somewhere with other people around, like a busy walk or a climbing gym with staff. Is there a route or a class you've been wanting to try?

If they push to meet somewhere remote or private, or if they try to change the plan once you have arrived, trust your instinct and leave. New Zealand Police say not to feel bad about cutting a date short if it does not feel right 2.

Tell them what to bring and wear

Be specific about what to wear. Do not assume they own trainers, or that they know what works for a rock climbing gym. One sentence makes it easier: 'Wear trainers and something you can move in. The gym provides climbing shoes and a harness.' This also signals that you are organised and that you have thought about them, which is attractive.

Charge your phone before you leave and plan your way home 2. A walk or ride can end kilometres from where it started, so know how you get back from the finish, not just the start.

Pick a level that suits you both

If you are suggesting a sport or a class, choose one for beginners or for people who are getting back into it. Do not assume they are as fit as you are, and do not book a class that will leave them exhausted or humiliated. A beginner's yoga class works. A competitive tennis league does not.

The same goes for difficulty. If you are suggesting a walk, pick one that is flat and short, not a steep coastal hike that takes four hours. If it is a bike ride, choose a quiet path with few hills. If it is climbing, suggest bouldering for beginners, not sport climbing on a rope. Finish somewhere you are both happy, not somewhere one of you is spent.

End with food and time to talk

Plan to finish at a cafe or a restaurant where you can sit, eat something light, and talk without sweating. Coffee after a walk works. A juice and a snack after climbing works. Do not schedule the food stop too tight, because sometimes the activity runs long or you both want to stay and chat.
