How to cancel a Board date fairly
Cancel early, through the listing, with a real reason. One honest line now costs less than a late cancellation that disrupts your date's day.

Cancel as early as you can, through the listing, with a real reason. Either side can cancel a confirmed date, and a cancellation more than 24 hours out costs your date little and goes on no record.
Why early cancellation matters
You have confirmed a date. Plans are made. Your date might have shifted their schedule, chosen an outfit, arranged transport, or simply built the date into their week. If you cancel the night before or on the day, you leave them with nothing to show for all that.
The later you cancel, the more your date loses. Cancel a week out and they find something else to do. Cancel two hours before and they have already showered and left home. Cancel the day of and you have cost them time and disrupted their day.
Cancel early and your date still has time to make other plans. Your honesty then buys you goodwill: they see someone who respects their time and says so when their plans change, not someone who strings them along.
Either side can cancel
A confirmed date is a plan, not a contract. Either the host or the guest can cancel it, and whoever cancels gives a reason with the cancellation.
Reasons might be personal, practical or simply a change of mind. A family emergency, a work crisis, a bout of ill health, or simply "I have thought about it and I do not think we are right for each other" are all real reasons. Your date does not get to judge whether it is good enough. What they need is to know you are not coming, and why.
Give a real reason
A real reason is something true, in your own words, written fast. It does not need to be detailed or elaborate. One honest sentence is enough. Your date reads it once and moves on.
Real reasons sound like this:
I am not feeling well and do not want to pass anything to you.
Something came up at work that I have to deal with.
I have been thinking and I do not think we are right for each other.
I have realised I am not ready for this.
All of these took five seconds to write, and all of them tell your date something useful: you are not coming, and why. They can then make a plan for their day without guessing.
The 24-hour window
Dateable records a cancellation if it happens inside 24 hours of the date. One recorded cancellation is not a punishment. The record exists so a pattern of last-minute cancellations can be caught before it wastes more members' evenings.
Cancel two weeks out, or three days out, and nothing is recorded. The 24-hour mark is where the cost to your date jumps: by then they have blocked out the time, turned down other plans and often arranged transport.
Three cancellations in 90 days
If you cancel a date within 24 hours of it, that cancellation is recorded. Three recorded cancellations in 90 days pause you for 30 days: a host loses posting, a guest loses applying. A guest who does not show up counts the same as a late cancellation.
This is not about judging you. A lot of life happens. But if you have cancelled three dates in the last three months, you might not be ready to be on the Board right now. A month away gives you room to sort out whatever keeps getting in the way, so the next person who plans around you can rely on it.
What not to do
- Do not ghost. Cancelling without a reason leaves your date hanging. Send something.
- Do not lie. "My car broke down" when you just changed your mind makes you untrustworthy. "I changed my mind" is better and faster.
- Do not wait until morning. Cancel as soon as you know you are not coming. Every hour you wait makes it worse.
- Do not blame them. "You seem like a nice person but" reads as an insult, not an explanation. "I have thought about it and this is not what I want right now" is clearer.
- Do not cancel over another platform. Use the listing. That is where your date expects to hear from you.
Cancel less by confirming less
Most cancellations start at the confirm button. You have 48 hours to confirm an accepted invitation, so use them: check the date against your calendar, your transport and your energy before you press it. The guide to accepting and confirming walks through that step.
If a date keeps drifting toward something you did not agree to, cancelling is a boundary, not a failure. Setting your boundaries early makes that call easier to spot. The community rules set out what every member on the Board is expected to do, including turning up for what they confirmed.
