What to say once a host accepts your application
Thank the host, confirm the day and time, ask about dress, and say yes or no within 48 hours. Use this first message to set a good tone.

When a host accepts your application for a Board listing, Dateable opens a private conversation between you. Your first message should thank them, confirm you are still interested, and ask any questions about the day itself. A message in the first hour sets a good tone.
The first message: thank them and confirm
A host who has sifted through applications and chosen you is taking time on this too. A short thank-you shows they made a good choice.
Thank you for accepting my application. I'm really looking forward to this. Can I check a couple of details with you?
That opens the door for questions without making the message too long. Some hosts will have left all the details in the listing: the venue name, time, dress code, how long it will be. Others will say more once you ask.
Confirm the when and where
The listing has a date and time, but hosts sometimes offer flexibility. Confirmation is always your call. Check the specific day, time and venue, especially if the listing said the venue would be revealed only to the accepted guest.
Just to confirm: we're meeting at 7pm on Friday the 21st? And you mentioned the exact venue in your message, but I want to make sure I have it right.
If the host has not yet named the venue, ask: "Will you share the venue name with me now so I can plan how to get there?" Some hosts keep the venue secret until acceptance to protect their privacy. If they do, ask for it now: it affects your transport, your timing, and whether you feel safe.
Once you have the full details, write them down with the host's phone number if they have shared it. Read how to accept and confirm for the rest of the safety steps before the date.
Ask about dress
The listing may name a venue, which suggests a dress code (a gala asks formal, a picnic in the park asks casual). Sometimes the listing is silent. Ask.
What's the dress code? I want to be underdressed and feel awkward, and I definitely don't want to overdress.
If the listing said "smart casual" or "black tie", you can still ask for clarity: "When you say smart casual, does that mean a dress or trousers, or either?" Dateable's guide to dress codes shows what they look like.
A host who keeps the venue secret might also keep the dress code fluid until you know where you are going. That is fine: ask when you learn where.
Read the first message again
Before you send, reread your message. Does it sound like you? Does it match your profile? Does it say "thank you, I am interested, here are my questions"? If it sounds stiff or over-formal, cut it.
- It thanks the host and shows genuine interest
- It asks clear questions: when, where, and what to wear
- It is friendly and specific, not stiff or formal
- It is a few sentences, not a paragraph or a single line
A long message with ten questions reads as fussy. A one-line thank you reads as careless. Aim for friendly, curious, and specific.
If the details no longer suit you
Sometimes a host accepts you, and between then and the date something changes. The timing no longer works. The venue disappoints you. You have thought about it more and realised you are not interested. You are allowed to decline.
Decline promptly and kindly. The host accepted you, not someone else, so they have turned away other applicants. A quick no means they can still reach out to someone else.
I'm grateful you chose me, and I hope I can do this another time, but the timing doesn't work out for me this week. I'm withdrawing so you can reach out to someone else. Best of luck with it.
A host will respect that far more than silence or a flake. They will be more likely to accept your application again next time you apply.
You have 48 hours to say yes
Dateable gives you 48 hours to confirm the date. If you do not reply within that window, the acceptance lapses and the host can accept someone else. Confirm means you are saying yes and you will show up.
Check the time zone if the host is in a different country. If the acceptance came through at 3pm your time on Wednesday, your 48-hour window closes at 3pm Friday. Do not assume you have until the end of the day.
Once you have confirmed, check the first message guide for how to keep the conversation warm and stay safe up to the date itself.
What happens after you confirm
After you confirm, Dateable notifies the host, and the conversation stays open between you. Either of you can cancel up to 24 hours before the date, though a cancellation inside 24 hours is recorded (three in 90 days, and the person taking the action gets a pause on posting or applying).
The day before the date, both of you get a first-date safety checklist. After the date, you can each leave a private rating and mark whether you would meet again. Those ratings stay private and help Dateable trust the community.
