Dating again after a long marriage starts with time to settle, then a clear idea of what you want now. Expect apps, short first dates in public and plain talk about expectations. Never send money to anyone you have not met in person.

If you last dated before smartphones, much of it will feel new. The basics have not changed: be honest, be kind, and choose people who treat you well. The rest is learnable.

Give yourself time first

Whether your marriage ended in divorce or in loss, you are grieving a person and a whole way of life. Healthdirect describes anger, shock, relief, worry and fear after a separation as normal responses, along with grief for the old routine 1. Those feelings travel with you onto dates.

There is no correct waiting period. A rough test: you are ready when you can talk about your marriage without it taking over the evening, and when you want to meet someone new rather than replace someone gone. If you are not sure, wait a little longer.

If the feelings are getting in the way of work or daily life, talk to a GP or call Lifeline on 13 11 14 1.

Decide what you want this time

After a long marriage, many people do not want another marriage, or not yet. Some want company for dinners and travel. Some want a relationship without sharing a house. Some want to be spoiled, and some want to do the spoiling.

Write down three things you want and three you do not. Be specific. "Someone to go to the theatre with every few weeks" is more useful than "companionship". This list becomes your profile, your first messages and your answer when someone asks what you are looking for.

Sugar dating suits people who like to state expectations up front. If that appeals, the post on starting sugar dating after a divorce covers it in more depth.

What has changed since you last dated

Most people meet online

Dating sites and apps are now an ordinary way to meet. In a 2019 study of how American couples met, meeting online had become the most common way for heterosexual couples to meet, ahead of meeting through friends 2. Joining a site is not a sign of desperation. It is where people are.

Profiles come first

People see your photos and a few lines before they ever hear your voice. Recent, honest photos matter more than flattering old ones. Use a photo from the past year, smiling, face clearly visible. The guide to choosing your photos walks through it.

First dates are short

A first date now is often a coffee or a drink for an hour, not a three-course dinner. That is a kindness. It lets both of you find out whether there is a spark without either of you committing an evening.

People talk about expectations early

It is normal now to ask, in the first few messages or on the first date, what someone is looking for. It is not rude. It saves time.

"I was married for a long time and I'm not in a hurry to do that again. I'd love someone to have dinner and see a show with. What are you hoping for?"

How to talk about your marriage

Your date will ask. Have a short, true answer ready, two or three sentences, and then move on.

"I was married for 24 years. We separated two years ago, and we're on good terms. I'm enjoying getting to know who I am on my own."
"My wife died three years ago. I still miss her, and I'm also ready to enjoy someone's company again."

Avoid a long history on a first date, and avoid criticising your ex. Both make a date feel like they have walked into the middle of something. The post on mentioning divorce or loss has more lines to borrow.

Watch for scams

Fake profiles are common. In a Pew Research Center survey, half of US online daters said fake accounts set up to scam people are very common 3. People coming back to dating after a long time away can be warm, trusting and comfortable, which is exactly what scammers look for.

The pattern repeats: strong feelings declared quickly, a push to move to WhatsApp, excuses not to video call or meet, then a request for money or an investment 4. The rule that protects you is simple.

Meeting safely

Meet somewhere public for the first few dates. Get yourself there and home. Tell a friend or one of your adult children where you will be and when you expect to be home. Keep your address and your financial details to yourself until you know someone well. The first-date safety guide has a full checklist.

Telling your family

Adult children can react in surprising ways, from delight to protectiveness to hurt on behalf of their other parent. You do not need their permission, but you may want to tell them before they find out another way. Keep it light: "I've started going on a few dates. It's early, and I'm enjoying it." The post on telling adult children you are dating goes further.

Expect it to feel strange

The first few dates may feel awkward, even disloyal. That fades. Some dates will be dull, and some will be lovely. You are allowed to enjoy them.
