How to tell a match you need discretion, with examples

Say what discretion means in practice: no photos online, no shared friends, dates away from work. Vague secrecy reads as a warning sign.

Two people on a date

Discretion means keeping your dating life private in specific, practical ways: no photos of the two of you online, no mutual friend networks, dates in places away from your everyday life. Saying it plainly is how you reassure someone that your need for privacy is not the vague secrecy scammers use to isolate people.

Why vague secrecy is a warning sign

Pressure to keep a relationship secret from family and friends is a listed fraud warning sign 1. A match who needs secrecy without explaining what they mean is raising a flag. The person reading your message needs to know that discretion is about your circumstances, not about hiding.

If you say "I need to keep this private" and leave it there, they may wonder if you are married, running from someone, or trying to isolate them. A two-sentence explanation fixes this. It shows there is a person with a real reason on the other end.

What discretion looks like in practice

  • No photos of the two of you posted online, or tagged in social media
  • Not introducing each other to friends or family until you are both sure
  • Dates in restaurants, bars or venues outside your workplace or regular neighbourhood
  • Not discussing the arrangement with colleagues or people who might know both of you

None of these stops your date telling their own friends where they are going, and none should. Say so: it is the difference between discretion and isolation.

In your profile

Write it as a fact about yourself, not as a demand. Your profile is where you talk about your expectations, so say it once and plainly:

I keep my dating life private: no photos online, no shared friends, dates away from my office. Open to the right person who feels the same way.

That is all you need. It tells someone what discretion means to you, and it invites them to think about whether that works for them. It does not ask them to help you hide.

In a first message

You do not need to lead with discretion. If the conversation is moving well after a few messages, raise it like this:

I have enjoyed our chats. Before we meet, I should mention I keep my dating life private. For me that means no photos together online, and we would meet somewhere away from my neighbourhood. Does that work for you?

You are being clear without being cold. You are also giving them a choice before you spend time meeting in person. If they say no, you have saved yourself a date that was not going to work.

On a first date

Bring it up early if you have not said it already. You might say:

I wanted to be upfront: I am quite private about dating. No photos together, and I do not mix my dating life with my friends or work. That does not mean I am not interested, just that I like to keep things separate.

Or ask them what they are comfortable with: "Are you private about your dating, or do your friends and family usually know?" Listen to their answer. If they want to post photos of you within a week and tell everyone they know, you are not a good match.

If you are married or partnered

Say it plainly. You do not get to hide this behind the word "discretion". A match deserves to know before they invest time or emotion. You can say:

I am currently partnered and we have an arrangement where I am able to date. That is not changing. Are you okay with that?

That is discretion. It is honest about what the relationship is, not secret about whether a relationship exists.

Offering reassurance

Once you have said what discretion means, give them a way to check you. If you get verified, a reviewer has compared a live selfie with your profile photos, so they know you match your pictures. A video call before meeting lets them see and hear you live.

You might say: "I am verified on here, and I am happy to video call before we meet." That is a concrete assurance that your discretion is not a disguise. Invite them to tell a friend where they are going on the date; saying it first shows you have nothing to hide from their side.

What discretion is not

Discretion is not hiding who you are from the person you date. It is not asking them to keep secrets from their own friends, and it is not "trust me" with nothing to back it.

The same test works in reverse. If a match asks you to keep things from your friends, reveals little while asking a lot, or asks for money before you meet, those are fraud warning signs 1. Stop replying. More for hosts is in the guide for generous members.
