Should you go somewhere else when a first date goes well?

If a first date goes well, you can move to another public place you know. Never go to their home or room, take your own transport, and tell a friend where you are.

Two people on a date

Only to another public place you know, on your own transport, and never to their home or room. Tell your friend the new venue before you move. Often the better choice is to end the first date while you both still want more, and plan the second.

Why a second venue can work

A good first date has momentum. You are both relaxed, the conversation is flowing, and you want more time together. Staying in the first bar or cafe might feel rushed when you are just getting warm. Moving somewhere else gives you time without stretching a single drink into an hour of silence.

A second venue is also a practical check. If they are pleasant at a restaurant and still pleasant at a late-night dessert place, you are learning something real about how they behave in different settings. But this only works if you stay in control of where you go and how you get there.

Public places only

Only move to a public place you know: another bar, a cafe, a dessert place, somewhere with staff and other people. Choose it yourself rather than following their suggestion to somewhere you have never been. SARC advises never going to their place, or having them come to yours, on a first date 1. A hotel room counts as their place.

If they suggest their place or yours, that is a clear moment to end the date. You can be direct:

I've had a great time tonight, but I'm not going back to a private space on a first date. How about we plan a second one?

This is not rejection. It is a boundary, and the right person will respect it.

Tell a friend exactly where you are

Before you move, text your friend the new place. Your friend knows where the first venue was; without this message, the plan they hold is wrong. SARC advises telling a trusted person who, when and where, and calling them when you get home 1.

Tell your friend:

  • The name of the new venue
  • The street or area, so they can find it
  • The time you expect to be there
  • That you will call them when you leave

You do not need to ask permission or wait for them to reply. Just send the message. If something feels wrong, call them immediately.

Moving to [venue name] on [street], will be there by [time]. I'll call you when I leave.

When you leave the second venue, do what you said: text them you are on your way, then again when you are home.

Your own transport, every time

Do not get in their car to reach the second place. If you drove, drive. If you walked, pick somewhere within walking distance. Otherwise, book your own ride. Taking your own transport means you control when you leave 1.

That matters more at a second venue than a first. It is later, you may have had a drink, and you are further from the place you planned. If they reveal something that puts you off, you can say your evening is done and walk out. Police say not to feel bad about cutting a date short if it does not feel right 2.

The best dates end while you still want more

A first date that ends while you both still have things to say leaves you both wanting a second. One that runs until the talk dries up ends on the tired part, and that is the part you remember.

If you do move, give the second place an hour, then call it. If it is still good, that is the best time to stop.

Signs it is time to go: one of you checks the time, the pauses get longer, or someone mentions an early start. None of these is bad. They mean the evening has done its work.

How to end it: the better close

Instead of stretching into a third venue or a late night, end on this:

I'm really enjoying this, and I'd like to do it again. Are you free next week?

It says you like them, it asks for a real next step, and it ends the night on a high note instead of a vague "I'll text you sometime".

If they ask why you need to go so soon, you do not have to justify it. "I want to end the night on a good note" is enough. If they press, or suggest going back to one of your places after you have said no, you have learned how they handle a limit. The guide to setting boundaries has more words for that moment, first-date safety covers the evening end to end, and the safety section has more posts like this one.
