Myth: deleting the app deletes your dating account
Removing the app from your phone leaves your profile and messages online. You have to delete your account in the app's settings to remove them.

Removing a dating app from your phone does nothing to your account. Your profile, photos and messages stay where they were, visible to other members. To actually delete your account, you go into the app's settings and delete it from there.
Why this matters
If you want to stop dating, deleting the app is automatic and easy. It feels like you are done. But you have only cleared your phone. Everyone else on the site still sees your profile, can message you, and might be able to apply to your Board listings. Your account is still active and has access to your photos, your message history and the conversations still sitting there.
This gap between "feels deleted" and "actually deleted" has caught people who thought they had quit. Someone goes back a month later and finds messages, or worse, learns that someone they did not want to hear from applied to one of their posts.
What happens when you delete the app
Deleting the app from your phone removes only the app itself. It is like taking a book off your shelf: the library still has a copy. Your account sits on the dating site's server, untouched.
Other members can still find your profile, message you and apply if you posted on the Board. No one sees that the app is gone from your phone. They have no way of knowing.
A few dating sites will pause or hibernate your profile if you have not logged in for a month or more. Even then it does not delete anything: it just hides your profile from search. The moment you log in again, it is visible.
How Dateable works
On Dateable, deleting your account is permanent. When you delete your account in settings, your profile, all your photos, your full message history and your applications vanish. Dateable removes it all within 30 days.
Before you delete, know that you cannot undo it. Once it is gone, it is gone. If you think you might come back to dating in a month or a year, do not delete: pause instead.
Pause instead of delete
Dateable lets you pause your account. When you pause, your profile goes dark. Other members cannot see it, message you or apply to your posts. It is as though you have stepped away.
Pausing keeps your account, your photos and your message history safe. If you come back and turn your profile on, everything is there. You have not lost anything and no one has messaged you in the meantime.
You pause in the same place you delete: the app settings. It is a radio button instead of a delete button. Choose this if there is any chance you will date again.
Cleaning up old sites
If you have used other dating sites, go back and delete your accounts there too. This is the harder part because you have to log in each time and find the delete or deactivate option. Many sites hide it.
- Open the site or app on a computer if you can: delete options are often easier to find on the website than in the app.
- Log in. If you cannot remember your password, use "Forgot password" on the login page.
- Find settings or account, often a gear icon or your name in a menu.
- Look for "Deactivate account", "Delete account", "Close account" or "Remove profile". The language varies.
- Follow the steps. Most sites ask you to confirm, sometimes by email.
- Save or screenshot the confirmation if they offer one. It proves the account was deleted.
If a site says your account will be deleted after 30 days of inactivity but stays visible until then, do not rely on it. Delete and move on.
Stop the charges
Before you delete, check whether you are still being charged for a membership. Many sites have a free mode but offer paid memberships: credits, unlimited likes, one message a day instead of five. If you signed up for one, deleting your account also cancels it.
On Dateable, membership is free, so there is nothing to cancel. But if you used another site that charges every month or every year, log in and cancel the membership first. Then delete the account.
I deleted the app but I'm still seeing charges on my card. The dating site is still active.
This is common. The app disappearing from your phone does not tell your payment method to stop. You have to cancel the membership on the site, and sometimes on the app store where you subscribed. Check your bank or card statement and trace each charge back to its source.
What you should do
If you have decided to stop dating, decide whether you might come back. If yes, pause on Dateable instead of deleting. If you are sure you are done, delete your account in settings and then go through each old site and delete those too.
Check your card or bank statement in two weeks to make sure no memberships are still running. If you find charges, go back to each site and cancel the membership.
Once your account is gone, your data stays private. You have taken back control of your privacy. No one can access your photos or your messages because they no longer exist on the site. Deleting the app only deletes it from your phone: deleting your account deletes it from the site.
