Should you pay to join a sugar daddy agency or group chat?
No: a fee to join a group, be matched or get access to a list of sugar daddies is a pay-first scam. The group does not exist.

Do not pay to join a sugar daddy group chat or agency. Any fee to be 'matched', added to an exclusive group or given access to a list of generous members is a pay-first scam, and the scammer will disappear after you pay.
What the sugar baby pay scam looks like
A scammer finds you on social media or a dating site and poses as a prospective sugar daddy. They offer to pay your bills, cover a debt, or give you regular money. Then they ask for a small payment first: a 'proof of loyalty' fee, a fee to unlock your profile in their 'exclusive group', or a charge to process the arrangement 1. Once you pay, they ghost you. The money is gone and they never contact you again.
In a second version, the scammer deposits money into your account, claims it was a mistake, and asks you to return it by buying gift cards and sending the codes. The deposit comes from a stolen or fraudulent account, so it disappears later and you are left in debt 1.
The 'exclusive group' version
Sometimes the scam wraps itself in the language of membership or access. You get a message saying you have been 'selected' for an exclusive group chat where you will meet verified sugar daddies, or that you need to pay to join a private agency. The pitch sounds legitimate: this is a curated group, they say, not a free dating app. Paying proves you are serious.
I am so impressed with you. I want to add you to my exclusive network of verified sugar daddies, but there is a $45 joining fee to verify your account. This keeps out scammers and ensures a high quality of members on both sides.
It is not. Real sugar dating does not gatekeep the attractive side behind a fee. On Dateable, joining is free for both generous and attractive members. The difference is in how you use the platform, not what you pay to join it.
Why these scams spread on social media
These group chat scams are pushed hard on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook where people are already vulnerable to romance fraud. Nearly 60% of people who lost money to a romance scam in 2025 said it started on social media 2. Scammers know the platform reaches people who are curious about sugar dating but new to it, isolated from peer advice, and less likely to recognise the setup.
Social media also gives scammers a way to build fake credibility. A profile with a few photos and testimonials looks like a real business. By the time you realise the group does not exist, you have already sent the money.
The fees that do not exist
Legitimate sugar dating comes with no joining fee, no membership cost, no proof-of-loyalty payment and no processing charge. What it does have is a simple ask: the generous side pays for dates. The attractive side sets their terms and joins free. Money moves directly between the two people who are actually meeting each other, not through a middleman or platform.
- No fee to 'prove you are serious'.
- No fee to be added to a private group.
- No fee to access a list of available partners.
- No fee to unlock your profile or photos.
- No upfront payment for 'matching' or vetting.
If someone asks for any of these, they are scamming you.
Why it works on you
The scam works because it uses real words from real sugar dating. 'Exclusive', 'vetted', 'verified', 'agency' these are words that appeal to people who want safety and structure. But real sugar dating does not need a middleman to collect fees in order to be safe. Verification here means a live selfie compared to your profile photos. Report and block are one press from any profile. You do not need to pay a company to access those.
What to do if you have paid
If you have already sent money to join a group, contact your bank straight away. Tell them exactly what happened and how much you sent. Your bank may not be able to recover the money, but it can block the account it went to and watch for other fraudulent activity 1.
Do not send more money. If the person who took your first payment contacts you asking for a second fee, or offers to 'help you recover' the first one, they are the same scammer or one working the same angle. Scammers are often run by the same criminal networks, and they recycle victim lists.
Getting started the right way
Sugar dating exists without fees because it is simply two adults arranging what they want from each other. The generous side joins a platform where the attractive side is, the attractive side joins free, and they meet. On Dateable, there is no cost at all: every feature is free on both sides. No one gets charged to join, message or exist on the platform.
If you are the attractive side looking for sugar dating, trust the free platforms first. If you are thinking about paying to join a private group or agency, ask yourself: who profits from this fee, and what are they actually offering that a free site cannot? Often the answer is nothing except access to scammers.
