Two people on a date

Say no plainly, without an excuse, and end the evening where you are. You owe nothing to anyone who bought you dinner or drinks, and someone worth seeing again respects your first no.

Why you do not owe them a yes

When someone takes you to dinner or a bar, they are not buying access to your home or your body. You do not owe them anything in return except company for that evening. This is especially true on a first date, when you have little to know how someone behaves behind closed doors.

Money is not the same as consent. Some people think that if they paid for the meal, they have earned the right to come inside. They have not. Generosity on a date is a gift, not a transaction. It does not come with terms attached to your body or your privacy 1.

The law is clear about this. Consent means freely agreeing to sex or sexual activity 2. You can withdraw consent at any time, even after sexual activity has started. If you never agreed to go to their place, that is not consent being withdrawn. It is consent that was never given in the first place.

Say no plainly, without an excuse

An excuse gives your date room to argue. "I have an early start" can be met with "So do I, but I can stay a little longer." "I'm tired" can become "That's fine, we'll just relax." A reason invites negotiation.

Say no without explanation:

I'm going to head home now.

That is a complete sentence. You do not need to add why. Your "no" stands on its own.

Scripts for different dates

If this is the first date

On a first date, the rule is firm: never go to their place or have them come to yours 1. You have no way of knowing yet whether they are who they say they are, how they handle boundaries, or whether you are safe alone with them.

I've really enjoyed this. I'm going to head home now. Let's do this again soon.

If the date went well

A good date can feel like it should continue, and the momentum can make it tempting to say yes when you would rather say no. Keep your boundary.

I've had such a good time tonight. I want to end it here so I can remember it this way. Text me tomorrow?

If they ask a second time

Some people will push. If your date asks you back to theirs again later in the evening, the "no" does not change because they asked twice. Be clear and kind, but firm.

I said no the first time. Let's say goodnight.

What happens after you say no

A person worth meeting again will accept your no and move on. They will not:

  • Ask why you do not want to come over
  • Ask you to reconsider
  • Make you feel bad for having a boundary
  • Withdraw affection or go silent as punishment
  • Bring it up the next time you talk

If your date does any of these things, they have shown you who they are. A person who cannot accept a no on one thing will have trouble accepting a no on others. That is valuable information about whether they are worth a second date.

How to end the evening safely

When you leave:

  • Use your own transport so you control when you leave
  • Tell someone you trust where you were, who you met, and when you expect to be home
  • Keep your phone charged and let them know when you arrive home
  • If something feels wrong, if your date pushes boundaries or becomes rude, you can leave at any time. You do not have to stay just because you said you would.

The conversation you might have later

If your date is genuinely interested in you and you are interested in them, a later conversation might happen. You might decide together that you want to go to their place, or they to yours. That is a choice you can make once you know them better. But that conversation happens only if you both want it, on equal ground, without pressure and without gifts or money as leverage.

A person who respects you will wait. A person who is worth waiting for will be glad you did. Someone who sulks or withdraws because you kept your boundary has shown you who they are. Trust that. The dates that feel easiest to leave are often the ones worth staying for later.

Build your boundaries and keep them

Saying no is a skill that gets easier with practice. The first time feels hard. The second time, less so. The fact that you are thinking about what to say now means you have already done the hard part: you know what you want, and you know it matters more than how someone else feels about your answer.

Set boundaries and stick to them. Someone worth your time will respect them, and that is how you know they are worth your time. If you are concerned about safety on a date, read more about first-date safety and how to set and keep boundaries.
