How to screen a match by message before you meet

Ask a few plain questions and check the answers against their profile. Consistency matters more than any single answer, and vague stories are a reason to slow down.

Two people on a date

Screen a match before you meet by asking three plain questions: what they are looking for, what a first date looks like to them, and whether they are verified. Consistency across their profile and their answers matters more than any single answer, and a vague or shifting story is a reason to slow down.

Why screen by message

Screening is not about judging whether someone is good enough. It is about gathering information to decide whether meeting them is worth your time. A few messages cost nothing. A bad date costs an evening, travel, and your safety.

On Dateable, screening is easier than on most sites because people state what they are looking for. Use that. Ask them to say it back to you in their own words, and see what they actually say.

Ask what they are looking for

Their profile says what they are looking for. Ask them to tell you. If they are clear, consistent, and specific, that is a good sign. If they dodge, go vague, or change the subject, that tells you something.

I'm curious what you're looking for in this. Can you tell me in your own words?

Listen to what they say. A person looking for a relationship should say something about connection, time together, shared interests. A generous member should name the kind of support they want to give and what kind of partner they are looking for. An attractive member should talk about what matters to them, not about money. If their answer sounds different from their profile, make a note. Ask a follow-up.

Ask what a first date looks like to them

Your profile says what kind of first date matters to you. Ask them to describe theirs. Do they want dinner? A walk? An introduction to their friends? Do they want to meet somewhere public, or are they comfortable with drinks at a bar? What time of day?

What does a first date look like for you? What would feel right?

Someone who is there to meet you will have an answer. They might need to think for a moment, but they will say something. Someone who is there for something else will say "wherever you want" or "I'm flexible" or not answer at all. A vague answer means they either haven't thought about you as a person, or they are not planning to show up.

Ask about verification

Dateable's verification confirms that someone is a real person who is who they say. A verified member has met the verification step. Some people have not bothered yet. Some people are not who they claim to be.

Ask directly. "I notice you're not verified yet. Are you going to verify before we meet?" If they say they will, give them a week. If they make excuses or say no, that is your answer about how seriously they take your safety.

Check for consistency

None of these three answers means much on its own. But together, they tell a story. Do their words match their profile? Do they answer clearly or do they dodge? Do they treat your question as reasonable or act like you are suspicious?

A real member is consistent across their profile, their messages, and their actions. They will be clear about what they want. They will answer your questions. They will understand why you are asking. They will move towards meeting you, not away from it.

  • Their profile says they are generous, but they avoid talking about what support looks like.
  • They say they want to meet soon, but when you name a time they go quiet.
  • They claim they are verified, but the app shows they are not.
  • They answer your questions, but each answer tells a different story about what they want.

Any of these is a sign to slow down and ask again before you meet.

Watch for the danger signs

Consistency check is good screening. But some signs are immediate. If someone asks for money, a gift card, your bank details, or a fee to "release" a payment, they are running a scam. That is not a reason to ask more questions. That is a reason to stop replying.

Read spot-a-scam for the full picture of how these scams work. The pattern is always the same: connection moves fast, the story keeps shifting, and they find a reason they need money from you. If someone does this, report them and block them. Dateable wants to know.

When the answers don't match

You do not need to accuse anyone of lying. You just slow down. You ask one more time, differently. You wait to see whether their answer stays the same. If they keep dodging the same question, you have your answer, and that answer is that you should not meet them.

Before we plan something, I want to make sure we're looking for the same thing. Can you tell me what would be a good match for you?

If they answer clearly and their story is consistent, move forward to meeting. If they still dodge, go vague, or tell you something that does not fit, then you have screened them out. That is the screening working.

Use screening to stay safe

Screening is not cynical. It is information gathering. It saves you time, and it keeps you safe. Read first-date safety before you meet anyone, and if you are dating for generosity as a sugar baby, read the sugar dating safety guide. Between screening by message and safety planning on the day, you have the best chance of a good experience.
