Why a first date at a home or hotel room is a mistake

Two people on a date

Meet somewhere public for a first date, always: a hotel bar, never the room; a restaurant, never their place or yours. A private place removes your easy exit and leaves you alone with someone you do not know. Police and sexual assault services advise against it, and anyone worth dating will not ask.

Public places are safer

When you meet in public, other people are around to see what is happening. A bar, a cafe, a park, a museum: witnesses matter. If something goes wrong, you can signal staff or another person for help. If you feel unsafe, you can leave.

Victoria Police report an increase in people being sexually assaulted after meeting in person someone they first met online, and advise meeting where there are lots of people around 1. The Sexual Assault Resource Centre in WA is blunter: never go to their place, or have them come to yours, on a first date 2.

Tell a trusted person where you are going, who you will meet, and when you expect to be home, and call them when you get home 2. If your date suggests a different location at the last minute, or does not show up and you feel uneasy, you have someone who knows exactly where to find you.

A hotel bar is not the same as a hotel room

A hotel bar is public. Staff are there. Other guests are there. You can stand up and walk to the door without needing anyone's permission. The bar is yours to leave from at any moment.

A hotel room is private. The door locks from the inside. Nobody walks past. Nobody can hear. If something goes wrong, the only way out is past them. When a date staying in a hotel says "come up for a drink" or "meet me at mine", assume they mean the room. Decline and name the bar downstairs instead. If they get upset that you will not go to the room, cancel the date.

Inviting them to your place is worse

Your home is where you sleep, where your things are, where you are most tired and off-guard. If you invite a date to your place, they know where you live. They know when you are home and when you are not. If something goes wrong, you have no witnesses and no way to leave except past them. If they later become abusive or threatening, they know how to find you.

Never invite a date to your place on a first meeting. Keep your address, your workplace, the cafe where you work from, the gym you go to, private. Keep the places you go regularly to yourself until you trust them 2. Once someone knows where to find you every Tuesday morning, you have lost the advantage.

A good date will not ask

A good date suggests a public place without being asked, because they do not want to be alone with a stranger either. On the Dateable Board, a private home or hotel room is not allowed as the first meeting place of an invitation at all.

If someone you have never met suggests coffee at their place instead of a cafe, or dinner at theirs instead of a restaurant, they have already ignored a basic safety boundary. That is a warning. The people worth dating are the ones who make you feel safe and respected, not the ones who push you to do things that make you nervous.

When someone suggests a private place

If a date asks you to meet at their home, their hotel room or yours, say no. You do not owe them a reason. You do not need to be polite about it.

I prefer to meet somewhere public for a first date. Let's go to a cafe or bar instead.

If they push back, complain, or make you feel guilty for saying no, cancel. Do not negotiate. Do not offer a compromise. Do not suggest you will meet privately next time. Someone who respects you will accept your answer. Someone who does not is showing you who they are.

How to choose a safe first meeting place

Pick a place with lots of people around, meet in daylight if you can, and share your location with a friend 1. Sit where you can walk to the door without passing them. Charge your phone and take your own transport so you control when you leave 2.

  • A restaurant or cafe during lunch or dinner rush.
  • A bar or wine bar in the afternoon or evening.
  • A museum, gallery or event with public entry during opening hours.
  • A park or public outdoor space with other people around.
  • Somewhere you know, so a last-minute change of venue stands out.

Before you meet anyone, read the first-date safety guide. Dateable's safety page lists what to do if something goes wrong, and the safety blog covers reporting and support.
