How to be a sugar baby
Set your standards, screen every match, agree support that keeps you independent, manage the money well and meet safely every time.

By the end of this guide you will have written down your standards, screened a match before meeting, and agreed support that leaves you independent. You will also have a money plan and a safety routine you use every time.
Keep it open while you set up and while you talk to someone new. On Dateable the sugar baby is the attractive side, open to any gender. The site's word for the other person is the generous member; most people still say sugar daddy or sugar mommy, and so does this guide where it reads better.
What a good sugar baby actually does
A good sugar baby is good company who knows exactly what they want. You bring time, attention and warmth to a relationship you chose. The generous member brings support: an allowance, gifts, hosted evenings, travel or mentoring. What that looks like varies widely between couples 1, and sugar relationships take many forms, from companionship to friendship to love 2.
Research on sugar dating finds sugar babies overwhelmingly describe having agency in their arrangements, while still meeting stigma 3. Women interviewed about power in sugar relationships named control over their time, their attention and their intimacy as the things that kept it working for them 4. This guide is built around keeping those three in your hands.
Dateable is dating. Nothing here is payment for time alone, intimacy or any sexual act, and messages and Board listings are checked for exactly that. The community rules set it out.
Step 1: Write your standards before you meet anyone
Standards decided in advance hold. Standards decided across a dinner table bend. Write yours in your phone's notes app tonight.
- Write what you want. Time together per month, the kind of dates you enjoy, whether you want exclusivity, and the support that would make a real difference to your life. A clear want makes the conversation short.
- Write your floor. The least you would accept, in time and in support. Knowing your floor stops you drifting into an arrangement that costs you more than it gives.
- Write your limits. What you will not do, whoever asks and whatever is offered. Limits written down are easier to say out loud. The guide on setting boundaries has scripts for holding them.
- Write your deal-breakers. Married and hiding it, pressure to meet in private first, requests for money or photos. One deal-breaker ends the conversation; you do not need two.
"I'm looking for something steady: two or three dinners a month, someone I enjoy talking to, and support with my living costs. I keep things discreet and I expect the same."
Step 2: Build a profile that filters for you
- Choose the attractive side when you join. The attractive side is free. You can change side once, so pick it first. Set "looking for" separately; it is its own field.
- Put a clear face first. Your first public photo must show your face. You can add up to 12 public photos and up to 12 private ones. Every photo is reviewed before anyone else sees it, and location data (EXIF) is stripped on upload.
- Keep identifying details out of every photo. No workplace uniform, street sign, car number plate, or view from your window. A stranger can find you from one of these.
- Say what you want in your headline and "what I am looking for". The headline holds 80 characters. A profile that names its standards gets fewer messages and better ones. The guide on writing your profile shows before-and-after examples.
- Get verified. Verification is a live selfie holding a pose the app picks at random, checked by a person against your photos. Verified members can read full Board listings, apply and post, and sit higher in search. The badge tells a good generous member you are real. Walk through it in how to get verified.
Step 3: Screen every match before you meet
Screening takes a week of messages and one video call. It filters out time-wasters, people who lie about who they are, and scammers.
- Stay in Dateable messages. Scammers push you onto WhatsApp or another app early 5. Messages here keep the record, and blocking and reporting are one press away.
- Ask specific questions. Where they work in broad terms, what a normal week looks like, what they want from an arrangement. Vague, shifting answers are a red flag.
- Reverse-image search their photos. A match whose photos belong to someone else is a scammer 5.
- Video call before meeting. A short call confirms they match their profile 6. A camera that never works is a sign of a catfish 7.
- Keep your details private. Your surname, address, workplace, date of birth and regular places stay private until you trust them 6. Screenshot their profile and your messages before you meet 7.
"I'd love to meet. Before I do, I always have a quick video call. Does Thursday evening suit you for ten minutes?"
Step 4: Spot the sugar baby scam
One scam is built for sugar babies. The scammer poses as a generous member and offers to pay your bills or debts. First they ask you for a small payment as "proof of loyalty" or to cover fees, then they disappear. In a second version they deposit a large sum, claim it was an error, and ask you to return it as gift card codes. The deposit came from fraudulent accounts, it vanishes, and you are left in debt 8.
"Before I send your first allowance, I need you to send $50 in gift cards to prove you're serious."
Nobody genuine asks a sugar baby to pay anything. Red flags include requests for your banking details, home address or phone number, offers to clear your debts, pressure to move off the platform, and requests for intimate photos 8. Never agree to receive money and move it on for someone: that is money mule activity, and it can lead to criminal charges 9. The guide on spotting a scam has the full list.
Step 5: Talk about support, clearly and early
The support conversation belongs after screening and before you invest weeks of your time. Raise it by the second or third date, or in messages once you both know you want to meet again.
- Name the kind of support you want. An allowance, gifts, hosted evenings, travel or mentoring. Each works differently, as the table below shows.
- Say your number or your need once, calmly. Then stop talking. Filling the silence with a discount is the most common mistake.
- Agree how often you see each other. Support and time belong in the same sentence, so neither side feels short-changed.
- Confirm it in writing in Dateable messages. A short summary protects you both if memories differ later.
"I'd like to talk about what we each want from this. I'm hoping to see you two or three times a month, and I'm looking for support with rent. Does that fit what you had in mind?"
"That's lower than I was hoping for. I'd rather we see each other less often than agree to something I'll resent. Could we meet in the middle?"
| Kind of support | How it works | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Allowance | Regular support agreed between you, often monthly | Agree the amount and timing in writing; never hand over bank logins |
| Gifts | Things chosen for you, on occasions or unprompted | Lovely, but they do not pay rent; say so if you need regular support |
| Hosted | They cover the dinner, event or occasion | Enjoyable and low-risk; fine for early dates |
| Travel covered | Flights and accommodation paid for a trip together | Book your own room and keep money for a ticket home |
| Mentoring | Introductions, advice, career help | Valuable long term; agree it as clearly as money |
Dateable never holds, moves or guarantees money between members. An offer on a Board listing is a statement by the host, not a promise Dateable backs. Scripts for both sides of the money conversation are in how to talk about an allowance.
Step 6: Meet safely, every time
- Meet in a public place with people around. A restaurant or hotel bar, never the room. Never their place or yours on a first date 6. Board listings may not name a private home or hotel room as a first meeting place.
- Tell a friend who, when and where. Share your location, and message them when you get home 6.
- Take your own transport. You decide when you leave. Charge your phone and keep sight of your drink 6.
- Cancel if the venue changes at the last minute to somewhere you do not know 6.
If you meet through the Board, you confirm within 48 hours of being accepted, and the day before the date both of you get the first date safety checklist. The venue is shown only to the accepted guest. Cancelling inside 24 hours, or not showing, is recorded; three in 90 days pauses applying for 30 days. Cancel early and politely.
Step 7: Stay independent
Independence is what keeps an arrangement a choice. Lose it and the arrangement starts choosing for you.
- Keep your own income or study going. An allowance can stop without warning. Your own plans should not stop with it.
- Never hand over control of your money, phone or accounts. Controlling your money, decisions or social life is a warning sign in any relationship 12, and controlling your access to money is a form of financial abuse 13.
- Keep your friends. Someone who wants you isolated from the people you trust is showing you a red flag 13.
- Keep your own private albums under your control. You grant access per member and you can revoke it any time. Never send intimate photos outside the app; once shared they can never be completely deleted 6.
Step 8: Run the money like a small budget
- Budget on your own income, not the allowance. Treat the allowance as extra. Put a fixed share of each payment into savings the day it arrives.
- Build a buffer first. Before any upgrade to your lifestyle, save enough to cover your rent and bills if the arrangement ends.
- Keep simple records. Date, amount or item, and from whom. Records help with budgeting and with any tax question.
- Check your tax position. In Australia, gifts given out of love on special occasions are generally not declared as income, but gifts can be taxable if they arise from a business-like activity 16. This is general information, not advice. Ask a registered tax agent about your own situation, and see money, gifts and keeping records.
Step 9: Review, renegotiate or end it well
Check in every month or two. What you agreed in week one may not suit month six. If the time, the support or the feelings have changed, say so.
"I've really enjoyed the last few months. I'd like us to look at how often we're meeting and whether the arrangement still works for both of us."
If it no longer works, end it kindly and in words, not by vanishing. If someone will not accept it, block them; a blocked member never sees you in search, on the Board or in messages. The safety page covers reporting.
"I've decided to end our arrangement. Thank you for the time we've had. I wish you well."
Questions people ask
How do I become a sugar baby?
Join Dateable on the attractive side, which is free. Write your standards first: what you want, your floor, your limits and your deal-breakers. Build a profile with a clear face photo and a headline that says what you are looking for, then get verified so you can apply for Board invitations. Screen every match with messages and a video call before meeting in public.
Is being a sugar baby safe?
It is as safe as the routine you follow. Stay in Dateable messages until you trust someone, video call before meeting, meet in a busy public place, take your own transport, and tell a friend where you are. Never send money, bank details or intimate photos. A paid dinner or allowance never buys consent to anything, and you can leave any date at any time.
How much allowance should a sugar baby ask for?
There is no standard figure, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Arrangements vary widely between couples. Work out what would make a real difference to your life, the least you would accept, and how much time you want to give. Say your number once, calmly, then listen. Agree the amount and timing in writing in Dateable messages.
What is the sugar baby scam?
A scammer poses as a generous member, offers to pay your bills, then asks you to send a small payment as proof of loyalty or fees, and disappears. Another version deposits a large sum, claims it was a mistake, and asks for it back as gift card codes; the deposit bounces and you lose the money. Nobody genuine asks a sugar baby to pay anything.
Do sugar babies have to sleep with their sugar daddy?
No. Dateable is dating, and nothing here is payment for intimacy or any sexual act. Research finds sugar relationships range from companionship and friendship to love, and not all include sex. A gift, dinner or allowance never buys consent. Consent must be freely given and can be withdrawn at any time. Set your limits before you meet and hold them.
Do sugar babies pay tax on an allowance?
It depends on where you live and how the support arises. In Australia, the tax office says gifts given out of love on special occasions are generally not declared as income, but gifts can be taxable if they come from a business-like activity. This is general information, not advice. Keep simple records and ask a registered tax agent about your situation.
Can men be sugar babies on Dateable?
Yes. On Dateable the sugar baby is the attractive side, and any gender can join either side. Who you want to meet is a separate field called looking for, so a man can join the attractive side and look for a woman or a man. The same standards, screening and safety routine in this guide apply to everyone.
