The male sugar baby's guide

Men on the attractive side meet fewer generous members and more scams. Where the demand is, how to stand out, what to say, and what to expect.

Silhouette of a man and a woman about to kiss against an orange sunset sky, trees dark along the bottom

By the end of this guide you will have set up a profile as a man on the attractive side, found the generous members actually looking for you, and screened out the scams aimed at men. You will also know what to expect, honestly, so a quiet first week does not put you off.

Keep it open beside your messages. Most sugar dating advice assumes the sugar baby is a woman. Much of it still applies to you; this guide covers what does not.

What differs for a man

A male sugar baby is rarer, and so are the people looking for one. In a survey of almost 70,000 people across 87 countries, being a woman predicted less openness to being the older partner who provides, and more openness to being the younger companion 1. That study measured attitudes, not who joins a site. It still points one way: fewer generous women than generous men.

Four things follow for you:

  • A smaller pool. Fewer generous members want a man, so each profile you contact matters more. Quality beats volume.
  • Less of a map. Research on sugar dating looks almost only at heterosexual arrangements with a man providing 2. There is little written about men on your side. You write more of your own script.
  • Assumptions about you. Some people assume a man who wants to be spoiled is lazy or a gold-digger. Some generous members worry you will resent them paying. Clear words at the start answer both.
  • Scams aimed at the eager. A man hoping for a rare generous woman is exactly who scammers write for. The section on screening covers the three you will meet.

On Dateable the sides are generous and attractive, any gender on either side, and "looking for" is its own field. Nothing in the app assumes the attractive member is a woman, or that the generous member is a man.

Where the demand is

Two groups of generous members look for men: women who provide, and men who provide for men. A third route skips the search altogether: the Board, where a host posts an occasion and members apply. Compare them before you spend your evenings on one.

Set "looking for" to everyone you would honestly date. If that is women only, say so; if you are open to men, a wider field widens the pool. Never tick a box you do not mean. The generous member who contacts you because of it deserves the truth, and so do you.

A sugar mommy reading your profile has her own guide. Skim How to be a good sugar mommy to see what she is told to look for, then give it to her.

Set up a profile that gets chosen

  1. Choose the attractive side at joining. It is free on this side. You can change sides once, so pick deliberately.
  2. Fill the profile past the minimum. A complete profile needs a photo, three profile fields and an about section of 50 characters or more before you can browse. Go further: height, interests, occupation. In a small pool, detail is what makes someone stop.
  3. Use a first photo of your face in good light. Your first public photo must show a face. Add a full-length shot in clothes you would wear to dinner, and one doing something you love. Skip the gym mirror and the car selfie. How to choose your photos has the rest.
  4. Keep work and home out of the frame. No lanyard, no street sign, no number plate. Put anything more personal in a private album, which you grant and revoke per member.
  5. Write "what I am looking for" in plain words. Up to 500 characters. Name the kind of time you offer and the kind of support you hope for. Never a price, never anything physical.
  6. Get verified. You cannot message, apply or post until you are. The verification check confirms you match your photos. A generous member choosing between a few men will choose the verified one.

A headline and "what I am looking for" you can adapt:

Headline: Good company, better listener, always on time.
I'm 27, work in architecture and cook far too seriously for one person. I'd love to meet someone generous and settled who enjoys long dinners, galleries and the odd weekend away. I'm comfortable with a partner who likes to host, I keep my word, and I keep things private.

"Comfortable with a partner who likes to host" does quiet work. It tells a generous woman you will not bristle at the bill, and tells anyone else you understand the arrangement.

Make the first move

In a small pool, waiting rarely works: start the conversation. Messages are free on both sides, and replies are rated, so a prompt, full reply from you lifts you in search.

  1. Read the whole profile first. A message that could go to anyone gets ignored. Name one thing they wrote.
  2. Ask one real question. It gives them an easy reply and shows you read.
  3. Say the arrangement out loud, lightly. One line that shows you know what this site is for.
  4. Stop at three sentences. Leave room for them to talk.

To a generous woman:

You mentioned opera on opening nights. I've only been once and I've wanted to go back since. What would you take a first-timer to see? I'm very happy being the one who's looked after, and I'm good company in return.

To a generous man:

Your line about long lunches that turn into dinner made me laugh. Where's the best one you've had? I'm discreet, reliable, and I'd love to be spoiled by someone with your taste.

When someone says they are not sure about a man in this role:

Fair question. I'm not after a meal ticket. I like being with someone generous, I bring real company, and I'd rather we talk it through than guess. What would put your mind at ease?

Screen out the scams aimed at you

Three scams aim at people on the attractive side. Each opens warmly.

  1. The loyalty fee. A "sugar mommy" or "sugar daddy" offers to pay your bills or debts, then asks you for a small payment first, as proof of loyalty or to cover a transfer fee, and disappears 3. A real generous member never asks you to pay anything. On the Board, a listing that asks the guest to pay, deposit or send money is refused.
  2. The overpayment. A large sum lands in your account, then comes a message saying it was a mistake and asking you to send it back as gift cards. The deposit came from fraudulent accounts; it vanishes and you are left in debt 3.
  3. The photo trap. Someone flirts fast, asks for intimate photos, then threatens to send them to your family or employer unless you pay. Adults are approached this way on dating sites and apps 4.

Other signs: pressure to move to WhatsApp early, strong feelings declared quickly, excuses to avoid a video call 7. Stay in Dateable messages until you have met, so block and report still work. How to spot a scam lists the rest, with the message each one opens with.

When someone offers money up front and asks for a fee:

Thanks, but I don't pay anything to receive anything. If you'd like to meet for a coffee first, I'm free this week.

When someone asks for photos before you have met:

I keep that for people I've met and trust. Let's do a quick video call instead, five minutes, just to say hello.

Run a good first date

  1. Video call first. A camera that never works is a common sign of a catfish 9. Two minutes settles it.
  2. Meet in a public place with people around. A hotel bar, not the room. Never your place or theirs on a first date 6.
  3. Get there and home on your own. Your own transport lets you leave when you choose 6.
  4. Tell a friend who, where and when. Screenshot their profile and share your location 9.
  5. Let them host if they offered. Thank them once, warmly, and move on. Fighting over the bill undoes what you wrote on your profile.
  6. Keep your surname, workplace and address to yourself until you trust them 6.

If a generous member raises support and you want to answer:

I'd like that, once we both know this works. For me it's about being looked after in a relationship I enjoy, not a price for anything. Can we talk about it after our next dinner?

Apply on the Board

The Board suits men on the attractive side well. You do not wait to be found: a host posts an occasion, you apply, and your note does the work. How to apply for an invitation covers every step.

  1. Read the listing and the host's profile. The host's profile is linked before you apply. Apply only where you fit what they are looking for.
  2. Write a note that answers the listing. Each note runs 50 to 800 characters. Name the occasion, say why you would enjoy it, and show you read the details.
  3. Confirm within 48 hours if accepted. Otherwise the acceptance lapses and the host may choose someone else.
  4. Turn up. A guest who cancels inside 24 hours or does not show three times in 90 days has applying paused for 30 days.

An example note, labelled as one:

Example. I'd love to be your plus-one for the gallery opening. I studied design, so I'll hold my own in front of the paintings and I'm happy to follow your lead with the room. Suit ready, and I'll be on time.

Honest expectations

  • Expect a slower start than a woman on your side. The pool of generous members looking for men is smaller. Plan on sending thoughtful messages and applying on the Board for a few weeks, not days.
  • Expect hosted dates before anything regular. Most arrangements begin with the generous member covering evenings out. An allowance, if it comes, usually follows trust. Sugar dating arrangements vary widely in what people do and how money or gifts are involved 11.
  • Expect the money to be a statement, not a guarantee. Dateable never holds, moves or guarantees money between members. What you agree stays between you.
  • Expect some judgement. People in sugar dating report agency in their arrangements, and also stigma and shame 2. Decide who you tell before anyone asks.
  • Never let the pool pressure your limits. Fewer options is not a reason to accept an arrangement that feels wrong. Generosity on Dateable is gifts, experiences, mentoring and support inside a relationship you both chose, never a price for intimacy. The community rules set this out.

The rest of your side's playbook, from profile to ending an arrangement, is in the attractive member's guide.

Questions people ask

Can men be sugar babies?

Yes. A male sugar baby is a man who dates a generous partner and receives support: hosted dates, gifts, travel, mentoring or an allowance, alongside time and company. On Dateable a male sugar baby joins the attractive side, which has any gender on it. The generous partner can be a woman or a man. Support is never a price for intimacy or any act.

Is it harder to be a male sugar baby?

Usually, yes. A survey across 87 countries found being a woman predicted less openness to being the older partner who provides, so fewer generous members look for men. Expect a slower start. A complete, verified profile, thoughtful first messages and applications on the Board make the most of a smaller pool. Quality matters more than volume.

Where do male sugar babies find a sugar mommy?

On Dateable, set "looking for" to include women, get verified, and message generous women whose profiles you have read closely, naming something they wrote. Apply to invitations on the Board, where a host posts an occasion and chooses from applicants. Be wary of any "sugar mommy" who offers money before meeting and asks you for a fee first.

Do male sugar babies date men?

Some do. Generous men looking for men are a real part of the demand, and many value discretion highly. On Dateable "looking for" is its own field, so set it to everyone you would honestly date. Never tick a box you do not mean. The person who contacts you because of it deserves the truth.

How much do male sugar babies get?

There is no standard, and anyone quoting a rate is guessing or scamming. Research finds arrangements vary widely in how money and gifts are involved. Most begin with hosted dates; an allowance, if it comes, follows trust. Dateable never holds or guarantees money between members, and support is never tied to intimacy or any act.

What are the common sugar mommy scams?

The loyalty fee: someone offers to pay your bills, then asks you for a small payment first and vanishes. The overpayment: money lands in your account, then you are asked to return it as gift cards, and the deposit disappears. The photo trap: intimate photos, then threats. Never send money, gift card codes or intimate photos.

Is being a male sugar baby legal?

Dating someone generous who hosts you, gives gifts or supports you is dating. Selling sexual services is a different matter and is regulated or illegal in many places. Dateable refuses anything priced by intimacy, in any wording. Laws vary by country and state, so this is general information, not advice; check the official source where you live.
